Malcius Sorrow

Malcius Sorrow is a forty-year-old tiefling bard and member of The Unfated Ones. He has crimson skin, pointed ears, horns, a tail and fiery-looking eyes. A charismatic traveling musician, he generally favors persuasion and protecting others over violence.

He grew up in Caldera. His father is a retired tiefling mercenary; his human mother is a teacher with musical ability. Leilana Anne Mournwind, his childhood sweetheart, later married Cristian Casimir. Malcius rekindled their affair at a fundraising dinner when he was twenty-five. Discovery led to his excommunication and fifteen years wandering. His treasured lute was Leilana's gift.

At Aelmor's rift, he bonds with a red-and-gold essence mote that empowers his lute. His Ballad can briefly charm chosen listeners and stop their movement under the demonstrated session rules. He helps the party close the rift and later kills the burrowing acid creature beneath the island with his empowered instrument.

Malcius tells his companions about the affair in Episode 17. In Beckinsdale he performs, helps investigate thefts and seeks peaceful solutions. He strongly objects when Todd kills a surrendered prisoner. Rory's constructed trial lets him encounter representations of his parents and infant self; it does not establish literal time travel.

By Pendilor, his reputation has reached Draegan Reynolds. Bureaucracy frustrates his attempts to speak to Alatar. He continues developing his magic and connection to his mote through music, including a song taught by his mother.
